FIRE
In order to protect your employees, your supply chain and the general public it is vital to ensure that potential risks associated with your business activities are identified, assessed and controlled.
One potential risk that all organisations (and individuals) must consider is the threat of fire within their workplaces and properties. Failure to address and manage the risk of fire could potentially lead to loss of life. In these situations corporate manslaughter or gross negligence manslaughter charges can follow if death occurs either due to corporate or individual gross negligence. Lesser injuries can also result in health and safety prosecutions. In addition to this organisations or individuals can also be prosecuted in cases where, although no fire has occurred, they have failed to manage the risk of fire appropriately. This has resulted in hefty fines as great as £400,000.
LEGISLATION
There are two significant pieces of legislation which apply to fire safety. The first is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The second is the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR).
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 employers, building owners and/or occupiers must conduct a fire risk assessment of all non-domestic properties which they are responsible for and keep it up to date. They must also ensure that suitable and sufficient fire safety measures are in place to reduce and manage the risk of fire. In the event of a fire occurring measures must also be in place which minimise the risk of injury or loss of life.
DSEAR requires organisations who utilise dangerous substances to assess the risk of fires and explosions and eliminate or reduce these risks.
WHAT CAN WE DO
We can conduct a fire risk assessment of your property/properties, including discussing fire safety arrangements with your key personnel where applicable. We will then work with you to implement a suitable and sufficient fire management system which manages the risks and protects the safety of property users and people in the surrounding area(s).
We can also conduct a risk assessment of dangerous substances and provide advice and guidance on how to manage the use and storage of these substances so that the risk of fires or explosions is eliminated or reduced.
